The 76th Congress of the International Fiscal Association took place this year in Cape Town. Chambers is delighted to have had a number of members attend, chair and speak on various panels, including Philip Baker, KC, OBE, Rita da Cunha and Oktavia Weidmann.
Philip Baker, KC, OBE chaired the first session of the IFA Congress on the topic of “The Meaning of Nexus for Tax Purposes”.  He also spoke on two panels: the Vienna University panel on International Tax at a Cross-Roads – The Future Drivers of the International Tax Architecture, and the Lunchtime panel on United Nations Tax Developments.
Rita da Cunha joined the IFA/EU seminar panel, chaired by Georg Kofler, along with Juliane Kokott, Johanna Hey, Benjamin Angel, Kristof Boel, F. Alfredo Garcia Prats, and Paolo Ludovici. She discussed the FASTER Directive, EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation and the Apple case.
Oktavia Weidmann joined the IFA panel on ‘Mobility, HNW individuals – latest tax developments’ together with James Whitaker (South Africa), Shaun Cartoon (Australia), Esiri Agbeyi (Nigeria), Shreya Rao (India) and Tracy Johnson (South Africa). The panel investigated the latest global migration trends of HNW individuals and discussed questions about capital gains and inheritance taxation, exit taxes, tax reporting, and wealth taxes. Oktavia focussed in her presentation on mobility and cryptoassets and how the younger generation heavily invests in cryptoassets, allowing them to relocate swiftly as those digital assets are held in the cloud.
